My good friend Martha, who lives in England, bought some earrings from Stevie's Artisans Urban Folk Art for two friends who live in California. Bonnie received the silvery gray "Fleur de Lis" style and black "Double Asia."
Meg received "Big Red Rose" and green "Cut out Leaves" earrings.
All arrived in time for Christmas and all are sculpted from lace
by Naemeh Shirazi of Stevie's Artisans Urban Folk Art.
My Fulbright Scholarship to Italy in 2006 began as a research project on the traditions and culture of three Saints' Feasts celebrations and then evolved into an exploration and appreciation of the folk art created as an integral part of the celebrations. When I returned to my home in Brooklyn I took a job as manager and buyer of the gift shop at The Bronx Museum of the Arts. I went from Italian folk art to contemporary, urban expressions embodied in graffiti and the hand-crafts and wearable art made by young NYC artists.
